David Gum Awng
Biography
David Gum Awng is the Deputy Foreign Minister of the National Unity Government (NUG) of Myanmar. He has over a decade of experience advancing democratic governance, human rights, sustainable development, and international cooperation, particularly in the context of Myanmar’s struggle for a genuine federal democratic future.
In his current role, David supports the NUG’s foreign policy and international strategy, leads diplomatic and advocacy engagement, and works closely with governments, international organizations, and civil society partners to mobilize international support for Myanmar’s pro-democracy movement. His experience also includes investigating and documenting human rights violations committed by the Myanmar military, contributing to international accountability efforts, managing Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects, and teaching public policy and civic education in conflict-affected and displaced communities.
David holds a Master’s degree in Sustainable International Development from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies with a concentration in International Relations and Global Politics from North Central College. He is an alumnus of the U.S. State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and France’s Future Leaders Invitation Programme (PIPA), and a recipient of the Open Society Foundations’ Civil Society Leadership Award.
