Statement on the establishment of the Office of Special Envoy
13 January 2023
The National Unity Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar warmly welcomes the establishment of the Office of Special Envoy, as announced by H.E. Retno L.P. Marsudi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Indonesia.
We are confident that Foreign Minister Retno will bring dedication and determination to her role as Head of the Office.
To further raise the bar of ASEAN’s Myanmar response, the Minister’s likely appointment of a new Special Envoy should see the role made full-time, and the Office of Special Envoy allocated human and financial resources matched to the mandate’s importance and scope.
Indonesia’s leadership of ASEAN arrives at a critical moment for Myanmar and amidst a groundswell of momentum. ASEAN Leaders’ call for support from the United Nations and external partners at the recent ASEAN Summits enabled the UN Security Council to adopt its historic first resolution on the situation in Myanmar. Significantly, this binding resolution confirmed the Security Council’s support for the will of the Myanmar people, demanded an immediate end to the illegal military junta’s violence, and stressed the need for full, safe and unimpeded humanitarian access to all people in need.
The National Unity Government extends its full support and cooperation to Indonesia as ASEAN Chair and to Foreign Minister Retno as Head of the Office of Special Envoy.
