Statement (10/2022)

NUG welcomes the United Kingdom’s decision to impose sanctions on companies delivering the weapons

20 June 2022

The National Unity Government welcomes the United Kingdom’s decision of 16 June 2022 to impose sanctions on companies delivering the weapons that allow Myanmar’s unwanted terrorist military junta to perpetrate its brutal violences.

These sanctions identify several Russian arms dealers who are selling drones and helicopter parts to the terrorist military junta.

These companies are encouraging the aerial bombardment of innocent civilians, a murderous campaign supported by Russian military advisers already embedded with junta troops. The role of these companies in conducting such sufferings should be condemned by all over the world.

Myanmar is not a display for Russian intimidation and violence.

The sanctions also include Myanmar companies who act as intermediaries between Russian weapon suppliers and the terrorist military junta.

The actions of these companies and their directors are extremely shameful.

The National Unity Government is committed to pursuing all legal avenues in ensuring that the victims of violence receive the justice that they deserve. Those Myanmar persons who are willingly supporting and participating in the distribution of arms to the illegal military junta should know that they will be held accountable for their crimes in court one day.
The National Unity Government further calls on the international community to use all possible means to end the flow of weapons to Myanmar’s illegal military junta.
