Statement (2/2025)

Appeal to the International Community

31 March 2025
  1. On March 28, 2025, a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, adding to the immense suffering already endured by the people due to the ongoing political crisis triggered by the 2021 military coup. The humanitarian toll has been catastrophic. As of March 31, over 2,400 lives have been lost, thousands are injured, and many remain missing. This tragedy is further exacerbated by the military junta’s continued airstrikes, even in the wake of the disaster, hindering urgent humanitarian efforts. The people of Myanmar are in desperate need of immediate support, and the international community’s solidarity is more crucial than ever.
  2. The National Unity Government (NUG) expresses its profound gratitude to Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, the European Union, India, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Norway, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the United Kingdom, the United States, Vietnam, and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs for their swift and compassionate response in supporting earthquake-affected communities.
  3. As the international community mobilizes to deliver critical aid, it is essential to uphold the core humanitarian principles of neutrality, humanity, impartiality, and independence. These guiding values must remain central to all relief efforts to ensure aid reaches those in dire need without interference. Past experiences have shown the military junta’s tendency to politicize and manipulate humanitarian assistance for its own gain, rather than prioritizing the needs of affected communities.
  4. Given these challenges, we urgently call on the international community, including the United Nations and ASEAN, to ensure that humanitarian aid is delivered directly to earthquake victims in Myanmar. It is imperative that aid is channeled through trusted and reliable partners to prevent interference and ensure that relief reaches those most in need. We also urge continued vigilance against any attempts by the military junta to divert or obstruct humanitarian assistance.
  5. We are in a race against time to save lives. Any obstruction to these efforts will have devastating consequences, not only due to the impact of the earthquake but also because of the junta’s continued brutality, which actively hinders the delivery of life- saving assistance. Coordinated and principled international action is critical to mitigating further suffering.
  6. The National Unity Government (NUG) remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering humanitarian aid to the affected regions. We are working tirelessly to facilitate relief efforts in collaboration with the international community, ensuring transparency, accountability, and the effective distribution of aid. Together, we can uphold the dignity of those affected and bring hope to Myanmar’s devastated communities.
